National Night Out is held in neighborhoods throughout the City of Westminster, Carroll County, and across the nation. Neighborhoods are asked to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the event. National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and cosponsored by the various law enforcement agencies and organizations nationwide. This event will involve over 11,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 35 million people are expected to participate in “National Night Out Against Crime.”
Purpose
National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
How It Works
Residents in neighborhoods throughout the Carroll County, will lock their homes, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Many neighborhoods throughout the Westminster will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, sidewalk parades, and youth activities. Police officers will be stopping by the neighborhoods thought the evening. National Night Out is held on the first Tuesday in August.
Our Part
Members from the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office will have a table set up at various National Night Out locations. This is one of the nights our State’s Attorney, Haven Shoemaker, looks forward to each year as he makes his rounds to various locations.
